Giving Wetsuits a Second Life: Our Partnership with Azores Surf Center

Giving Wetsuits a Second Life: Our Partnership with Azores Surf Center

Every year, thousands of wetsuits end up in landfills. Made from petroleum-based neoprene, they can take decades to decompose, releasing harmful chemicals into our environment. For surf schools and rental centers that go through dozens of wetsuits annually, the impact multiplies quickly.

That's why we're excited to announce our partnership with Azores Surf Center — a collaboration that's turning the tide on wetsuit waste in one of Europe's most pristine surf destinations.

Two Ways We're Making a Difference

1. The Wetsuit Recovery Program

Azores Surf Center handed us a collection of old, worn-out wetsuits that would typically be thrown away. Instead of letting them end in a landfill, we're giving them a second life.

The problem of wetsuit waste in the surf industry has been growing for decades. Traditional neoprene wetsuits are notoriously difficult to recycle, and most recycling programs don't accept them.

Our team is currently exploring creative ways to repurpose these materials — from upcycling them into accessories to breaking down materials for alternative uses. The goal? Zero waste, maximum creativity.

This recovery initiative proves that even "end-of-life" wetsuits still have value. We just need to think differently about what happens after their time in the water is done.

2. A Sustainable Rental Fleet

Azores Surf Center is also investing in our rental line wetsuits for their daily operations. These aren't your typical mass-produced suits.

Our rental wetsuits are designed with:

By choosing sustainable wetsuits for their rental fleet, Azores Surf Center is reducing their environmental footprint with every surf lesson, every rental, every single day.

Why This Matters

Surf schools and rental centers are on the frontlines of ocean sports. They introduce thousands of people to the water each year, shaping how the next generation thinks about surfing and ocean conservation.

According to Ocean Conservancy, the choices we make about the gear we use directly impact marine ecosystems. When a surf center like Azores makes the switch to sustainable gear, they're not just reducing emissions — they're setting an example.

The impact is real:

  • Fewer wetsuits in landfills
  • Lower carbon emissions per rental
  • A circular economy model for surf gear
  • Education through action

The Bigger Picture

This partnership is just the beginning. We believe the surf industry can — and should — lead the way in ocean conservation. Organizations like Sustainable Surf have been pioneering this movement, proving that environmental responsibility and great surf experiences can go hand in hand.

Azores Surf Center gets it. They're not just running a business; they're running a business that cares. Located in the stunning Azores archipelago, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, they understand the importance of protecting the waters that sustain their community and livelihood.

And that's the kind of partnership we're proud to be part of.
